Plan Your Season

It is time for season planning! This involves setting goals and writing an action plan. First, take time to reflect on the progress of your past season; what were your training methods and concepts, were you able to achieve your goals, what improvements have you made to carry into the next season, etc. Start now! Don’t think that things will get better on their own if you wait to get started. Even though planning seems to be time-consuming, it actually saves time and provides direction.
Strelski zvezek provide room to write down your greatest dream, your long-term goals, and divide your path into different stages. Each stage will have one to three semi-long-term goals. You can draw a timeline and markdown stages with associated goals. The stages should be at least one season long and divided into periods: pre-season period, preparation period, competition period, and resting period. An action plan is made for one season and considers different periods planned accordingly.

Write down your season’s goal. Think about a potential match placement you want to achieve and the score that you think will get you there. Also, think about the process and write down how you want to compete. When it comes to an action plan, many areas need to be considered. You can write them below or around the season goal you’ve just written down. Divide them into three different groups and for each one, think about what improvements you can make to achieve your goal. Try and write this by hand – discover the benefits of doing so!
Physical/Positional
These are areas you want to start covering at the end of the resting period and during the pre-season period. Break down the score based on the positions, series, etc. and build progress through smaller series of shots. Think about any equipment changes you might want to make. Make a plan for physical fitness. Include balancing exercises outside the range and balance drills at the range, core strengthening exercises, cardiovascular training.
Technical
This includes everything from loading to putting your rifle/pistol down or your shot routine. Think about your hold, your zero point and your starting point, approach to the target. What is your breathing like? What about the accuracy of aiming, your timing of aiming and triggering as well as the cleanness of triggering? Do you actively follow through? The key is to look for consistency in every part. Drills like different games and step tests, are usually practiced in the preparation period, Scatt practice is recommended.

Mental
During the competition period, also focus your training on practice matches. Challenge your teammates, invite friends to watch and make noise, do things that make you feel uncomfortable like these drills. For your mental training think in terms of different visualization and breathing techniques. For your emotional training attend to your personal emotional issues in order to focus effectively. Your wait training means developing patience and persistence. Being mentally fit also means living in an environment relatively free of stress and anxiety, having plenty of rest to recover, and keeping a moderate social life that includes activities that enhance athletic lifestyle. Mental calmness is also reached through good time management, which means having a realistic time frame for each day. Having a weekly schedule is a must to be successful in different areas of your life. To be able to have that, you also need a season’s calendar – make good use of the one provided in Strelski zvezek! Mark down all competitions, pick two to three matches in a year where you want to peak. Move backward from those peaks to determine training days, mark down exam days or important days at work, and define breaks, family and friend time.

Make an honest assessment of where you’re positioned as a shooter right now. Talk to your coach, make an action plan together. If you don’t have a coach, find mentors who can help you. If your access to the range is limited, dry fire at home, take time to visualize more. Don’t blame poor conditions, be resourceful! Stay curious, try out different approaches. Don’t just wait for things to happen on their own, because they won’t. You have to earn it. And you earn it by doing it.
